The Donkey Sanctuary has taken in about 2400 donkeys rescued from all parts of Ireland. Many have been abandoned or put in a field and given little or no attention after having worked for their owners for years, hauling peat or pulling a cart. Built in 1865, the cathedral remains one of Corks most famed landmarks. The cathedral is based on the William Burges French gothic style design. Burges gave the cathedral a Resurrection Angel, made of copper and gold leaf as a gift and it is located on the pinnacle of the sanctuary.
