Birr Castle Gardens and Science Centre remains one of Ireland’s top attractions. New this season is the amazing Summer Quest which will take the young and maybe not so young explorers on a journey through time, from great engineering feats to wildlife discoveries, and many more highlights in between. Keep the children busy in the Giant Tree House - the tallest in Ireland and let them bounce out their energy on our bouncy pillow in the adventure playground, with an ice cream kiosk to keep them cool. If the sun isn’t shinning all day long, the Science Centre is steeped in history with all the incredible inventions that happened in Birr over many generations, including the great telescope.
Birr’s stunning Gardens in the 120 acres of Birr Castle Demesne, with magical river walks, and awesome Great Telescope, tick all the boxes for the nature lover, garden enthusiasts, scientists, historians and photographers. This year there is the opportunity to bring some of the world-famous Birr Gardens home with you with stunning plants for sale.
And if you are looking for something really special, take a castle tour (12 years and over).
The Parsons family have lived here since 1620 and the castle is a rare gem in the heart of Ireland and part of Ireland. The castle tour includes a 45-minute guided tour of stunningly beautiful reception rooms. A guide will lead you through the magnificent rooms while educating you on the extraordinary and pioneering history of the Parsons family, most especially in science. Your guide will also discuss the antique furniture, the family portraits, chandeliers and tapestries within the rooms you visit.
Birr Castle is situated in the Heritage town of Birr, known for its Georgian architecture and easily accessible from all over Ireland and is the perfect day out.

• General admission tickets can be purchased on-line and at reception. Family tickets cost €25 for a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children up to 16 years). Children under 5 are FOC. General admission with Castle Tours cost €18 per person
• Castle tours must be pre-booked. Castle tours in May, June, July and August. Monday to Saturday at 10.00, 11.30, and 13.00 each day, pre-booking is essential to avoid disappointment. Castle tours are suitable for 12 years and above only.

School Tours at Birr Castle Gardens and Science Centre
At Birr Castle Gardens and Science Centre they have designed a range of school tour packages to suit all group sizes and ages. Their tours are designed to be fun and educational, and aim at inspiring students to explore science, astronomy, engineering and biodiversity.
The specially designed tour packages include: Discover Primary School Maths and Science Tour, a Guided Discovery Tour, and the Discovery Quest Tour.

The stunning gardens at Birr Castle are home to an abundance of rare plants and trees along with feats of scientific and engineering wonder for all to view and enjoy.
The award-winning formal gardens, surrounded by the hornbeam cloister walk, proudly houses the world's tallest box hedges as listed in the Guinness Book of Records.
The gardens are also home to the famous Great Telescope, once the largest in the world for over 70 years, which was created by the 3rd Earl of Rosse in the 1840's.
The historic Science Centre transports visitors back to a time when Birr Castle Demesne was a hub of scientific discovery and innovation. The galleries reveal the wonders of early photography, engineering and astronomy.
The castle, which has been the home of the Parsons family since 1620, opens it's doors during the summer months for guided tours, offering visitors a chance to visit this private residence (May-Aug, selected times, age 12 plus, pre-booking advised).
