GPO Witness History Visitor Centre
Award winning GPO Witness History visitor centre is located in the iconic GPO (General Post Office) building on O’Connell Street, Dublin. This unmissable experience is a must see on your visit to Dublin this Summer with something for everyone!
Explore the fascinating story of modern Irish History and the 1916 Easter Rising in this spectacular setting. The history of modern Ireland is brought to life through electronic touch screens, video, audio visual booths, sound and authentic artefacts.
The visitor centre also features the Thomas F. Meagher Foundation Exhibition - the first ever permanent exhibition on the Irish Flag to commemorate the 170th anniversary of the first flying of the Irish Tricolour in 1848.
The GPO was the communications hub of Ireland and headquarters of the men and women who took part in the 1916 Easter Rising. The Easter Rising set in motion an unstoppable chain of events which would ultimately lead to the creation of the Irish Republic.
Today the GPO building remains as the headquarters of the post office in Ireland as well as being an enduring symbol and a place of commemoration. The building has been witness to over two centuries of history (originally built in 1818) and it remains one of the oldest operating postal headquarters in the world.
GPO Witness History Visitor Centre has won numerous awards including the Micheletti Award at the 2017 European Museum Academy Awards. This prestigious award is the European prize for innovative museums in the world of contemporary history, industry and science. The judges at the European Museum Academy Awards were effusive in their praise of GPO Witness History;
"The Centre is a perfect example of 20th century history in retrospect, dealing in an even-handed way with a very emotive subject that would have been impossible even a decade ago. It is an extraordinary achievement, an historical challenge that has been transformed into a reconciliation centre which also poses questions for the future. Our warmest congratulations go to the whole team."
Relax afterwards in the courtyard café and browse the gift shop which are open to the public. This iconic venue is also available for private functions and events.
Visit Santa at Dublin’s GPO
Santa Experience coming to GPO Witness History from 1st December
Santa and his Elves are on site at Dublin’s GPO as they begin construction work on a magical Santa experience at GPO Witness History Visitor Centre. The construction team made up of Santa’s most talented Elves from the North Pole were spotted with giant candy canes, sleigh bells, tinsel and fairy lights on O’Connell St. They’ll be working around the clock to ensure that the children of Ireland can visit Santa from 1st December at the GPO.
This Christmas, for the first time ever, Santa will reveal how the children of Ireland’s letters make their way from post boxes around the country to the North Pole. Visitors to the unique Santa Experience at the GPO will meet the Christmas Postman and Santa’s Elves who help make Christmas happen, before visiting Santa in his secret grotto in the GPO Courtyard where each child will receive a special gift.
The Santa Experience at GPO Witness History will take place on the following dates:

Kids and big kids alike will also have the chance to learn the secrets of the ClausOptic cable. This top-secret device which has only ever been seen by Santa, his Elves and postmen, ensures that every single letter makes it to Santa in time for the big day.
Commenting on the construction work Alice, Head Elf and Forewoman said: “I have been involved in many construction projects with Santa over the years, so I have a huge amount of experience in creating the magic of Christmas. I recently helped complete a major refurbishment of Santa’s Workshop in the North Pole which was my most ambitious job to date, but when Santa came to me with this project, I knew I had to put my best team of Elves on the job. He asked me to create something extra special for the children of Ireland, so I knew immediately that GPO Witness History was the perfect place to bring the joy of Christmas to Ireland. I can safely say this is going to be our most magical build to date.”
GPO Witness History Visitor Centre is wheelchair accessible and buggy friendly. Everyone is welcome!
