Kylemore Abbey

Bring all the family to visit beautiful Kylemore Abbey and Victorian Walled Gardens situated in one of Ireland's most beautiful woodland estates.

Nestled in the heart of the Connemara countryside, Kylemore is visually stunning with a fascinating history.

Hop on their shuttle bus which will bring you to their Victorian Walled Garden where you can explore this wonderful 6 acre oasis. Children can enjoy discovering the Head Gardeners and Under Gardeners houses and burning off some energy on their woodland and lake shore walks. The Garden is one the country’s finest example of Mid Victorian Gardening with its formal flower beds, herbaceous border, parterre, vinery, fern walk and extensive vegetable and herb gardens.

Enjoy lunch in Mitchell’s Café or some home baked treats in the Garden Tea House.  Colouring pages and books available to keep the little ones occupied - half portions and baby bowls also available.

Built by Mitchell Henry for his wife Margaret in 1868, Kylemore was a sumptuous home with all the innovations of the Victorian Age. Following a series of family tragedies the Henry’s left Kylemore and its next residents were the very glamorous Duke and Duchess of Manchester who lived here for seven years. The next people to make Kylemore their home were the Benedictine nuns who still live and work here today.

The nuns opened a prestigious girl’s school at Kylemore in 1922 which flourished until its closure in 2010, you can learn all about life at Kylemore Abbey School in our school room exhibition. Visitors can explore a number of restored rooms in the Abbey, as well as an audio visual presentation and fascinating history talks three times a day. Stroll our tree lined avenues to visit the beautiful neo-Gothic Church where international choirs perform lunch time concerts throughout the year. The Henry family Mausoleum lies a little further along the avenue in a sheltered spot in the woods. Children will love the opportunity to make a wish at the Ironing Stone, a massive Giant’s Wishing Stone located on the Eastern Avenue.

Easter at Kylemore Abbey

On Sunday the 1st of April we will have an Easter Sunday Family Funday from 12pm to 4pm and all are welcome! The Easter Bunny and friends will be on site to welcome little ones with hugs and chocolates! Right now the Easter Bunny helpers are busy creating a magical trail of clues that will lead eager detectives on a journey of fun and discovery all around the beautiful Walled Garden. Expect everything from bunnies, to lady birds, hot air balloons, to kites and dream catchers and maybe even a cowboy or two! On this year’s trail you will also have an opportunity to meet our new pigs who have just moved into their new sty by the Garden Wall and they are looking forward to meeting all the local children. We put a lot of effort in each year to make sure that the trail is both pretty and surprising while children also love exploring areas they might not usually go to in the Garden. We have a big supply of delicious chocolate bunnies which will be rewarded to each child who completes the trail. Our pastry chefs will be busy creating lots of delicious cakes and treats for the restaurant and Tea House so Mums and Dads will be well looked after too!
